Veliká doba žádá velké lidi. Jsou nezpoznaní hrdinové, bez slávy a historie Napoleona. Rozbor jejich povahy zastínil by i slávu Alexandra Macedonského. ... Mám velice rád toho dobrého vojáka Švejka, a podávaje jeho osudy za světově války jsem přesvědčen, že vy všichni budete sympatizovat s tím skromným nepoznaným hrdinou.

Great times demand great people. There are unrecognized, unassuming heroes, without the fame of Napoleon. The results of an analysis of their character would overshadow the glory of even Alexander the Great. ... I really very much like the good soldier Švejk, and in presenting his fateful adventures during the World War, I am convinced that all of you will sympathize with this modest, unrecognized hero.

And so on that memorable day there appeared on the Prague streets a moving example of loyality. An old woman pushing before her a bathchair, in which there sat a man in an army cap with finely polished Imperial badge and waving his crutches. And in his button-hole there shone the gay flowers of a recruit. And this man, waving his crutches again and again, shouted out to the streets of Prague: "To Belgrade, to Belgrade!" He was followed by a crowd of people which steadily grew from the small group that had gathered in front of the house from which he had gone out to war.
